looksmaxxing
The pursuit of maximizing physical attractiveness, ranging from ordinary self-care ('softmaxxing') to extreme and sometimes dangerous interventions ('hardmaxxing'), built on the belief that facial appearance largely determines a man's social worth.
Definition
Looksmaxxing means treating attractiveness as a stat to be maximized. At the mild end it is ordinary self-improvement — skincare, haircuts, fitness — rebranded with gaming language. At the extreme end it involves risky physical interventions and a fatalistic ideology in which facial bone structure decides a man's entire social and romantic future.
Origin
The term comes from the looks-rating forum culture of the 2010s, where users graded faces on pseudo-scientific scales and debated which features could be "fixed". The vocabulary and the belief system escaped those forums and reached a mass teenage audience through TikTok and YouTube Shorts from around 2023.
Why it matters
The community's core message — that your face is your fate, measurable to the millimetre — is a body-dysmorphia engine aimed at teenagers. This site documents the practices promoted under this banner and what is known about their harms, and deliberately never describes techniques in how-to detail.
