Canthal tilt is a real anatomical descriptor: the angle of the line running from the inner corner of the eye to the outer corner. Looksmaxxing culture converted it into a graded attractiveness metric. A "positive" tilt — outer corner higher than inner — is prized as part of the "hunter eyes" ideal, while a "negative" or downward tilt is treated as a defect that lowers a person's rating. The measurement itself long predates the manosphere; it belongs to clinical description of eye anatomy. Looksmaxxing forums adopted it in the 2010s as part of their pseudo-technical grading of faces, and the term went mainstream in the early 2020s as looksmaxxing content, face-rating filters and celebrity comparisons spread on TikTok. Canthal tilt talk is a stronger signal than mewing talk because it is measurement rather than practice. Someone who knows their own tilt has been studying their face against a template — often literally, with an app or filter — and has adopted the looksmaxxing premise that attractiveness is a checklist of skeletal angles. The feature is fixed: no exercise changes it, which leaves the vocabulary pointing in two unhelpful directions — blackpill fatalism about being unfixably below standard, or interest in cosmetic procedures marketed to correct a "flaw" that clinicians would mostly not recognise as one. Parents hearing the phrase should be less concerned with the anatomy than with the grading habit, and with which accounts taught it.
