Bonesmashing is the looksmaxxing subculture's most extreme widely-known idea: that deliberately striking one's own facial bones will cause them to heal into a more defined, angular shape. The belief rests on a misreading of Wolff's law, a real principle about bone adapting to habitual load, which does not describe what happens when bone is injured. ^[1] This site does not describe methods, and there is no version of the practice that is safe.

Medical commentary on the trend has been uniformly negative — the practice is described as carrying real risk of fracture and lasting damage in exchange for no cosmetic benefit. Origin

Reporting traces the idea to a September 2018 post on an incel forum, where it appears to have begun as a trollish suggestion rather than a sincere practice — absurd advice seeded to see who would take it seriously. The concept resurfaced on TikTok, circulating in the spring of 2023 and again that autumn, when news coverage and medical rebuttals gave it a mainstream visibility cycle. ^[1] Much of what circulates under the label remains ironic, which complicates reading any individual mention.

A teenager mentioning bonesmashing is usually quoting the meme; the term's shock value is the point. The signal strengthens sharply with any evidence of practice rather than talk.
