Chad

Internet slang for a stereotypically attractive, confident, sexually successful man — in incel communities the archetype of the 'genetic winner', elsewhere an often affectionate meme.

Definition

"Chad" is the manosphere's name for the man who wins by existing: tall, square-jawed, effortlessly confident, successful with women without strategy or effort. In incel communities he is a load-bearing concept — proof, as they see it, that attraction is decided by genetics rather than character, since Chad breaks every rule the dating-advice industry sells and wins anyway. [1]

Outside those communities the word has softened into general meme slang. Calling someone "a chad" or "gigachad" is now frequently a compliment, meaning bold, self-assured or admirably indifferent to opinion, with no ideology attached.

Origin

The name appears to have started as Chicago slang for a particular type of affluent young man, and was popularised online by a 2006 satirical website for a fictional social club, the Lincoln Park Chads Society. It re-emerged in 2013 in the "Chad Thundercock" meme mocking stereotypical alpha males, and from there was absorbed into incel and wider forum vocabulary, spawning the Chad-versus-virgin meme format. [1]

Usage

The word's meaning depends entirely on the frame around it. In mainstream meme use it is neutral-to-affectionate. In incel use it is a fixed caste: Chad occupies the top of a genetic hierarchy that the speaker believes he can never enter, and resentment of Chad often coexists with idealising him. When "Chad" appears in a sentence that ends in "so it's over" or "no point trying", the speaker is using the fatalistic version.
