The map of the manosphere

The branch of the men's rights movement focused on family law — custody, access, child support and "parental alienation" — and the claim that courts are biased against fathers. It is the movement's most mainstream and sympathetic wing, built on real parental grief, and also the one where its central factual claim is most testable against the evidence.

The appearance-obsessed subculture that began on incel forums and went mainstream on TikTok — where attractiveness is treated as a stat to be maximized, from ordinary grooming ("softmaxxing") to invasive surgery and steroids ("hardmaxxing"). It is the wing of the manosphere aimed squarely at teenage boys, and the home of a whole vocabulary of self-rating despair.

The organised men's rights movement — the anti-feminist branch of the 1970s men's movement that campaigns on custody, false accusations, male suicide, conscription and domestic violence. The 2012 subreddit that turned pick-up techniques and anti-feminist theory into a named worldview, growing to nearly 200,000 subscribers by April 2017; Reddit quarantined it in September 2018. It remains online behind a warning screen, and its vocabulary now circulates far beyond Reddit.
