Definition

Softmaxxing is what looksmaxxing calls its shallow end. Encyclopedic coverage defines it as the subset of looksmaxxing involving "non-invasive and simple practices used to achieve minor improvements to one's appearance" — skincare, grooming, clothing choices and general fitness. ^[1] In other words, the practices themselves are the ordinary self-care that predates the subculture by generations. What the word adds is a frame: appearance as a stat being optimised, and "soft" as the qualifier that implies a harder tier above it.

Origin

The word is one of the many coinages built on "-maxxing", the suffix that became popular across online incel communities during the 2010s as shorthand for maximising a trait. ^[3] The soft/hard split belongs to the looksmaxxing pipeline specifically. Researchers describing the trend's platforms note that the project "begins with 'softmaxxing'" — basic hygiene such as teeth brushing and whitening, removal of face and body hair, and mewing — and "progresses to 'hardmaxxing'", the tier of extreme physical intervention. ^[2] The vocabulary reached a mass teenage audience when looksmaxxing content spread on TikTok from around 2023.

What it signals

Usually very little. A teenager who says he is "softmaxxing" is, in practice, washing his face and going to the gym, and the ironic register is common. The word is still worth noticing for two reasons. First, it reveals the source of the advice: softmaxxing is looksmaxxing vocabulary, so the routines are being learned from communities and creators whose harder content is one recommendation away. Second, the term's own grammar normalises escalation — describing skincare as the "soft" version concedes that a "hard" version exists and frames it as the next level rather than a different category.
