Who he is

Mystery — the Canadian performer Erik von Markovik — is the pickup artist who turned seduction into a system. His "Mystery Method" is the structured routine at the centre of Neil Strauss's The Game, and he went on to teach it on the VH1 reality show The Pickup Artist. ^[1]

Why he matters here

Mystery is where pickup artistry became a curriculum: openers, routines, negging and a numbered escalation ladder, sold as a repeatable path to attraction. That framing — that desire can be engineered with the right script — is the load-bearing premise the site examines in do women prefer jerks over nice guys?, and Wikipedia notes he "has been criticized for promoting unethical and manipulative behavior". ^[1] His method is the direct ancestor of the "game" vocabulary that later hardened into red-pill doctrine.

In the record

Some of the Mystery Method's vocabulary has been defined by Mystery himself in press interviews rather than by his critics. Asked by Salon in 2007 to explain the technique, he described negging in practical terms:

A "neg" is a statement or action one would make to briefly disqualify oneself from being considered a potential suitor.

^[2] A year later, defending the flamboyant dress — "peacocking" — that made him recognisable on The Pickup Artist, he told Time Out New York:

When I wear this fuzzy hat, do I know it's stupid? Of course I know it's stupid.

^[3] By 2018, with the manosphere's more openly hostile factions drawing scrutiny, Mystery had put some distance between himself and his own legend, telling BuzzFeed News he still felt awkward at how he had been depicted in The Game. ^[4]
