Definition

An indicator of interest — almost always abbreviated IOI — is pick-up-artist shorthand for a sign that the person being approached is receptive, whether spoken or read from body language. In the seduction community's model of an approach, the signal is a gate: once a "target" has given indicators of interest, the pickup artist is described as free to show interest in the woman in return.

Where it comes from

The term belongs to the jargon of pickup artistry that grew up around the seduction community, the same body of technique documented by Neil Strauss in The Game and codified in the Mystery Method. ^[1] It sits beside its companion, the shit-test, as one of the signals a practitioner is trained to watch for during day game and an opener.

In the manosphere

The vocabulary is telling in itself. Reframing another person's interest as an "indicator" to be scored and reacted to turns a conversation into a system of inputs and outputs — the core move of pickup artistry that later critics of the manosphere point to. The word is descriptive rather than harmful on its own, but it is a reliable marker that whoever is using it has absorbed the seduction-community frame.
