Definition

A wingman is a companion who comes along to help someone else meet a romantic or sexual prospect. Wiktionary records the sense — extended from the aviation image of a pilot flying alongside another — as a friend or associate who accompanies one to offer or receive support, "especially in flirting with love interests". ^[1] The job is social scaffolding: giving a friend cover to approach, holding the attention of others in a group, or simply making a solo approach feel less exposed.

Where it comes from

The word is borrowed straight from military aviation, where a wingman is the pilot who flies in the same formation to protect and support the lead. ^[1] Dating slang keeps the shape of the metaphor — a trusted partner who covers your flank — and it long ago passed into everyday use. The pick-up-artist scene simply gave the role a more explicit function.

Inside pick-up culture the wingman is a defined position rather than just a mate along for the night. Wikipedia's account of the seduction community notes that pickup artists may often approach repetitively, alone or with a wingman, part of a numbers-game approach to meeting women. ^[2] In that setting the wingman assists the sarging session — supporting an opener, easing a friend's approach-anxiety, and occupying a target's friends.
