Is men's testosterone collapsing?
The core fact is real: a genuine, age-independent population-level decline in men's testosterone has been documented across birth cohorts. But the popular story around it is not. "Collapsing" overstates a gradual generational trend; the flagship claimed cause — soy — does not affect male hormones at all in pooled clinical trials; and the researchers who found the decline explicitly could not attribute it to any observed factor, leaving the cause unresolved rather than pinned on modern villains. A real trend has been wrapped in overreach.
The claim
"Testosterone is collapsing" is one of the manosphere's most emotionally effective talking points, because it fuses a health anxiety with an identity crisis: today's men, the story goes, have a fraction of the testosterone their grandfathers had, and modern life — soy, seed oils, plastics, feminism — is chemically emasculating them. It is usually the setup for something to buy or a lifestyle to adopt. This page separates the part that is real from the part that is sold.

The strongest piece of the claim is also its foundation. Tracking American men across three survey waves, researchers found a fall in testosterone that held up even after accounting for the men's ages.

So the premise — men's testosterone has been drifting down across generations — is genuinely evidence-based, not a marketing invention. [1] That is the part worth taking seriously.
But the cause is unknown — not "soy and plastics"
Here the manosphere's version detaches from the science. The same researchers were explicit that they could not trace the decline to any factor they measured: it "does not appear to be attributable to observed changes" in the men's health and lifestyle, and they raised birth-cohort or environmental effects "not captured in observed data" only as open possibilities. [1] In other words, the study that established the decline expressly did not identify a culprit — it left the cause unresolved. Confidently naming soy, seed oils, or feminism as the mechanism is filling that gap with a story the data do not contain.
And the single most-repeated culprit is demonstrably wrong. A meta-analysis pooling dozens of clinical trials reached a conclusion its title states plainly:
Neither soy nor isoflavone intake affects male reproductive hormones.
Soy does not lower testosterone. [2] The "soyboy" mechanism at the centre of the meme is not supported by the trials that actually tested it.
"Collapsing" versus declining
Finally, the framing. A real, gradual population-level drift downward is not the same as a "collapse," and a documented trend in group averages is not a diagnosis of any individual man — nor does it, on its own, establish anything about "failing masculinity," which is an interpretation stacked on top of the number rather than a finding from it. The decline is real; the apocalypse is editorial.
Verdict
Partly supported. The empirical core is true: men's testosterone really has declined at the population level in a way that is not explained by age, and it is fair to call that real and worth investigating. But the manosphere's version overshoots on every other axis — "collapsing" dramatises a gradual trend, the flagship cause (soy) is refuted by the clinical evidence, and the actual cause is, by the finding's own authors, unresolved rather than pinned on modern villains. Take the decline seriously; treat the causal story, and the products sold on the back of it, with skepticism.
