"Spermageddon" is one of the manosphere's favourite pieces of doom: men are becoming biologically weaker, their sperm counts crashing generation on generation, and modern life — whatever the speaker dislikes about it — is to blame. Unusually for the claims on this site, the core of it is correct. The interesting work is separating the part the evidence supports from the apocalypse bolted onto it.

Start with the finding, because it is unusually solid. Pooling decades of data on men not selected for fertility problems:

A roughly 52% fall in sperm concentration over about four decades is a large, real effect, not a rounding artefact. [1] This is the part the manosphere gets right.

It isn't just the West, or just old data

A common rebuttal — that the trend was a Western quirk that has since stopped — does not hold up either. The 2022 update widened the net to every continent and ran the data through 2018:

The decline appears global and ongoing, not a localised blip. [2] On the empirical question — is this happening? — the answer is yes.

But the doom and the diagnosis aren't established

What the evidence does not deliver is the rest of the claim. The measure is sperm concentration, a lab number, not a demonstrated collapse in men's ability to father children or in birth rates — many men well below the historical average remain fertile. The cause is genuinely unresolved: obesity, chemical exposures, smoking, heat, measurement changes and selection effects are all debated, and no single culprit — least of all the manosphere's preferred villains — has been established. And "spermageddon" as a prophecy of human extinction is rhetoric, not a finding. The trend is real; the apocalypse and its neat explanation are added on top.

Verdict

Supported. This is one of the cases where the manosphere is pointing at a real, well-evidenced phenomenon. The best meta-analyses find sperm concentration has fallen dramatically over the past half century — roughly 52% in Western men from 1973 to 2011 — and that the decline is global and ongoing through 2018. The empirical claim is sound. What is not established is the story wrapped around it: the cause is genuinely unknown, the figure measures concentration rather than proven infertility, and the apocalyptic framing outruns the data.
