Definition

Oneitis is pickup-artist slang for "attraction towards a single potential partner to the exclusion of other possible partners". ^[1] The "-itis" suffix does the ideological work: devotion to one person is named as if it were an inflammation — a condition a man suffers from, rather than a normal way of being in love. In community usage the word usually describes a man fixated on a woman who does not return his interest — Wiktionary marks it as slang sometimes associated with the manosphere in a negative way. ^[1]

Origin

The term comes from pickup-artist forums and manuals, where it was standard jargon by the late 2000s — Wiktionary's earliest print attestation is from 2008 — and it later travelled into red-pill and incel vocabularies with the rest of the PUA lexicon. ^[1] Its home ideology matters for reading it: UN Women's manosphere glossary describes pick-up artistry as a core manosphere ideology that teaches men to pursue women "as if a game" while mocking the idea of sexual consent. ^[2] Within that game framing, exclusive attachment is a strategic error — hence a disease name for it.

What it signals

Oneitis is a warning-sign term less for its cruelty than for its framing. The underlying experience it describes — a painful, unreciprocated crush — is among the most ordinary in adolescence. What the word adds is the judgement built into its grammar: devotion to one person is labelled a sickness, something to be got over rather than felt. A young man calling his own feelings oneitis has usually picked the word up from manosphere spaces, and with it the assumption that deep attachment is a malfunction. The steelman version — do not build your whole life around someone who is not choosing you — is reasonable advice; the disease framing goes further, treating caring itself as the problem, which is a poor foundation for any future relationship.
