MGTOW
An online community of men who advocate withdrawing from relationships with women — and in some cases from society at large — in the belief that feminism has made both irredeemably hostile to men.
Definition
MGTOW — Men Going Their Own Way — is the manosphere's separatist wing. Where pick-up culture teaches men to pursue women strategically and men's-rights activism seeks to change laws, MGTOW counsels exit: refuse marriage, minimise or end relationships with women, and treat detachment as the only rational response to a society its adherents believe is structured against men. The Anti-Defamation League classifies it as a distinct faction of the manosphere, within the broader set of male-supremacist and anti-feminist movements that exist largely online. [1]
Community writing typically describes graduated levels of "going your own way", from rejecting marriage while still dating, through refusing all relationships with women, to total withdrawal from work and society at the furthest extreme.
[1]Origin
The acronym's exact origin is disputed and the community's early history is poorly documented; it circulated on English-language antifeminist blogs and forums during the 2000s and grew substantially in the 2010s through YouTube commentary channels and dedicated forums. Unlike movements with founders and manifestos in the public record, MGTOW spread as a label that loosely-affiliated communities adopted, which is partly why accounts of its beginnings vary.
What it signals
The label matters because it adds ideology to that choice. Monitoring organisations note that MGTOW communities frame all people and institutions as feminist-captured until proven otherwise, and that their rhetoric leans heavily on misogynistic language and grievance. [1] The practical signal is therefore direction of travel: contentment with single life points nowhere, while MGTOW identification tends to come bundled with escalating hostility toward women as a class and deepening withdrawal presented as awakening.
