grindset
A hustle-culture identity word for treating round-the-clock money-making effort as a lifestyle and a badge of superior discipline.
Definition
Grindset is a blend of "grind" and "mindset". In hustle culture it names an identity built around relentless work on money-making projects — early alarms, side businesses, self-denial — presented as proof of discipline and superiority over people content with ordinary jobs and leisure. The word travels attached to the sigma-male meme: the "sigma grindset" is the lone-wolf version, in which success is pursued alone and social life is framed as a distraction.
Origin
The term grew out of motivational-business meme accounts of the late 2010s and exploded as an internet meme format from late 2020. The meme-documentation site Know Your Meme describes sigma grindset and hustle culture memes as posts that "both parody and support motivational memes which promote self-improvement and focus on entrepreneurship, usually at the cost of maintaining an active social life or spending time on leisure", records the format achieving viral spread in mid-December 2020, and dates the "sigma grindset" variant to March 2021, when it merged with the sigma-male classification meme. [1] From the start the register has been double-edged: a large share of grindset content mocks hustle culture rather than promoting it.
What it signals
On its own, almost nothing. Grindset is one of the most thoroughly ironised words in the manosphere-adjacent vocabulary, and most teenagers who say it are quoting a joke. The sincere version matters more: earnest grindset talk is the house style of hustle-course marketing, where ordinary schooling and employment are recast as traps for the unenlightened and a paid course is offered as the exit. The useful question is not whether a young person says grindset but what sits around it — admiration for specific hustle influencers, hostility to school, or requests for money to join an online "campus" or course. In that company the word marks exposure to a sales funnel rather than to a meme.
