Andrew Tate hashtags had 14.1 billion TikTok views at his ban

When TikTok, Meta and YouTube removed Andrew Tate's accounts in August 2022, videos under the #AndrewTate hashtag had already been viewed 14.1 billion times on TikTok.

The number

By late August 2022, when TikTok, Meta and YouTube removed Andrew Tate's accounts, videos under the #AndrewTate hashtag had been viewed 14.1 billion times on TikTok — alongside 4.7 million Instagram followers and over 760,000 YouTube subscribers. That is the scale of the audience the bans were aimed at. [1]

What it does and doesn't establish

The 14.1 billion figure measures the reach Tate had accumulated at the moment the platforms acted — it shows how large the audience was, not what the bans achieved. A cumulative hashtag view count is not a headcount of unique viewers or active followers, and it says nothing about how much of that reach survived through fan reuploads afterwards. The peer-reviewed record finds deplatforming genuinely shrinks reach while leaving content circulating and recommender demand intact, which is why the underlying question comes out only partly supported: Does deplatforming work?
